Maximum Validity of an SSL certificate is capped Now To 1 Year

From September 1, 2020, SSL certificates will have a maximum validity of 13 months, or 398 days. If you are using a 2-year certificate that was issued before September 1, it will stay valid until its expiration date.

SSL certificate is a backbone of online security that secures the data transmitted between the server and the browser. The CA/Browser forum brings regular updates regarding encryption technology by upgrading modern security standards and algorithms.

The reason for shorter SSL/TLS certificate lifespans

The CA/Browser forum has decided to shorten SSL validity by keeping it for 13 months instead of the old validation period.

The reason to do so is to keep encryption standards up to date. The longer validity takes much time to update the entire certificates, which happens in the case of the SHA-1 algorithm.

Moreover, the information that is used to validate the certificate will be updated on a regular basis due to 13-month validity.

How does the SSL certificate’s maximum validity affect you?

The current certificate validity will remain for 13 months, and if you have a 2-year certificate validity, the certificate will remain valid until it expires. The condition is that the certificate should be issued before September 1, 2020.

If you are using a two-year certificate that was issued before September 1, your certificate will stay valid until its original expiration date. You can renew a certificate for 398 days only.

How does SSL2BUY offer a five-year certificate?

SSL2BUY offers a 3-year and 5-year SSL certificate. However, with this new update, the SSL certificate should be reissued every year to keep its validity intact.

When you reissue the certificate every year, you can enjoy a multi-year subscription. The customer will be notified via email before 30 days to get a new certificate.

How do I reissue my certificates?

Reissue of an SSL certificate will extend the validity in case of multiyear SSL certificate validity (Max 3 and 5 yrs. offering).

It means that if you have 3 or 5 years, Certificates should be reissued every year to keep the certification valid. The current renewal of the SSL certificate period starts within 30 days. You can renew SSL before 30 days from its expiry.

  • At SSL2BUY, you just need to create new CSR for the process of reissue a certificate and submit to the configuration page.
  • After that, complete email validation process.
  • Once it is done, you will have reissued certificate that you can install on the server.

This is an eventual attention to inform our existing certificate holders and prospective buyers on the subject of changes to SSL certificate validity period. Still, if you have any queries related to this change or require further information regarding SSL/TLS deployment, please don’t hesitate to contact our support team.

Conclusion

Short validity helps SSL providers keep customers’ information updated on a regular basis, and the latest encryption standard offers strong encryption. In this new rule, you need to reissue and reinstall the certificate in a single year to extend the certificate’s expiry.
